Robert Pattinson’s role as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” Saga is soon coming to an end. Many have speculated that he may end up following in “Harry Potter” superstar Daniel Radcliffe’s footsteps and step into the land of musical theater. Rumor has it that in 2009, Billie Joe of the band Green Day listed his first choice to play the main character in a movie adaption of “American Idiot” as none other than the “Twilight” star himself.
If Billie Joe mentioned Robert Pattinson years ago, why does anyone remember it now? VH1 recently aired a “Pop Up Video,” in which it ran a version of Green Day’s “21 Guns” along with the captions: “Hollywood is trying to turn [American Idiot] into a movie… Billie Joe has said that his first choice to play the main character: Robert Pattinson.” “He’s a good actor,” Billie Joe had said at the time. “There’s still more to come in that kid.” Of course, Joe was right, as Pattinson went on to explode into fame with the release of the next two “Twilight” movies.
It wouldn’t be too out of this world if Pattinson were to end up with the role. After all, on top of being one of the most popular celebrities in Hollywood right now, Pattinson is also looking for a way to leave the role of Edward Cullen in “Twilight” behind. Not to mention he has a musical background: not only does he play the guitar and the piano, he also is a singer/songwriter, with two of his songs featured on the “Twilight” soundtrack, and three in the little-known film “How To Be.” Neither Green Day or Playtone, the production company owned by Tom Hanks collaborating with Green Day for the film, could be reached to give a comment.
